1. Who we are

Mamawise is made by Meraki IT, a South Africa-based software studio. This policy covers the Mamawise mobile app and this website (mamawise.care). If you have questions about this policy, contact us at amanda@meraki-it.co.za.

2. What Mamawise stores, and where

Mamawise does not have a backend server. There is nothing for the app to send data to, even if it wanted to. Everything you enter is stored locally, on your device, using standard on-device storage:

None of this personal information is transmitted anywhere. It is not backed up to a Meraki IT server. The only optional exception is the anonymous impact counts described in section 6, which never include the rows in this table.

3. Accounts

Mamawise does not require you to create an account, and does not ask for your name, email address, or phone number to use the app.

4. Notifications

Reminder notifications (for example, for an upcoming antenatal visit) are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device, based on dates you enter. They are not sent from a server, and Mamawise is not notified when you receive or dismiss one.

5. Sharing your information

Mamawise includes a setting called "share with clinic," intended for a future version that would let you choose to share check-in results with a health worker. As of this version, that setting is a placeholder only — turning it on or off changes nothing, and nothing is transmitted. Nothing leaves your device today.

If you use the app's export or "share" feature to save or send your data yourself (for example, by email or messaging app), that happens through your phone's own share function, at your instruction. Mamawise does not control or see where that information goes once you've chosen a destination — the same as sharing any other file from your phone.

6. Optional anonymous impact metrics

With your permission, Mamawise can share anonymous, aggregated usage counts with Meraki IT — for example, how many check-ins were completed this week in your country, or how often the birth-prep checklist was used. This is off by default. You can turn it on or off at any time in Settings, and turning it off stops any further sharing immediately.

What this does and doesn't include: it never includes anything you typed or selected inside a check-in, your name, your exact location, or anything that could identify you or your device as belonging to you specifically. It includes only counts (for example, "a check-in happened") tagged with your country and the week it happened in. A random, anonymous ID is generated on your device only if you opt in, is used only to avoid counting the same phone twice, is never linked to any other information about you, and automatically changes every 90 days.

This data is combined with data from other Mamawise users before Meraki IT ever sees it — individual counts are added into a shared regional total and the underlying per-device information is discarded at that point. Because of this, if you opt in and later opt out, we can stop any future sharing, but we can't retrieve or delete your specific past contribution from a regional total, because it was never stored as something attributable to you in the first place.

We use this only to understand whether Mamawise is being used and where, and to share that picture — never individual data — with the organisations and partners who support the app's development. We do not sell this data, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Mamawise does not include advertising, third-party analytics, or trackers of any kind. This optional channel is first-party reporting to Meraki IT only. A store listing (like Google Play) may also show us aggregate install numbers that Google collects under its own policy.

This website, mamawise.care, similarly does not use cookies, analytics, or tracking scripts. We only receive information you choose to send us directly — for example, by emailing us.

7. Data deletion

Because your personal information is stored on your device, you're always in control of it. Uninstalling the app permanently deletes all of its locally stored data from your phone, including any anonymous ID used for impact metrics.

If you had opted in to impact metrics, we cannot pull your past contribution out of a regional total, because those totals are not stored in a form that points to you. Turning the setting off — or uninstalling — stops any further sharing from that phone.

8. Children's privacy

Mamawise is designed for pregnant and postpartum women and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children, and — per the sections above — we do not collect personal information from any user, of any age.

9. A note on data protection law

Laws like South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the EU's GDPR generally regulate organisations that collect, store, or process other people's personal data. Your profile, check-in answers, and logs never leave your phone, so most of those obligations have limited application to how that data is handled. The optional impact metrics in section 6 are designed to be aggregated and non-identifying — they are meant to fall outside what those laws treat as personal information — but that is a design goal, not a legal determination. If you have questions about how this applies to your situation, we'd encourage you to seek independent legal advice.

10. Changes to this policy

If Mamawise changes what it stores or how — for example, if a future version adds an optional clinic-sharing feature — we'll update this page and change the "last updated" date above before that feature becomes active.
